Type 1 diabetes explained for kids
3 min read
In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops making insulin. Kids with type 1 get insulin from a pen or a pump, and they check their glucose every day.
Why does it happen?
The body's defence system, the one that fights germs, makes a mistake. It attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Doctors are still studying why. It is not caused by eating too many sweets, and it is not anyone's fault.
How do kids look after it?
- Checking glucose with a finger-prick meter or a sensor
- Getting insulin with a pen or a pump
- Counting the carbs in meals
- Always carrying a fast sugar in case of a low
💡 Diabetes can't be caught like a cold. You can hug, play and share games with a friend who has diabetes!
A whole team helps
Doctors, nurses, dietitians, parents, teachers and friends all help. With practice, kids learn to do more and more by themselves.
