Diabetes at school and with friends
3 min read
Kids with diabetes go to school, play with friends, go on trips and sleepovers. A few simple things help everyone feel safe.
At school
- Teachers know what to do for a low
- You can eat a fast sugar or a snack in class when you need to
- You can check your glucose and take insulin at school
- There is a plan written with your family and your diabetes team
How friends can help
- Be kind and don't tease
- If your friend looks unwell, tell a grown-up right away
- Remember: diabetes is not contagious
- Ask questions! Most kids are happy to explain
Sleepovers and trips
With a little planning, kids with diabetes can go on sleepovers, school trips and camps. Some camps are just for kids with diabetes, and they're lots of fun!
💡 Playing Glucoville together in class is a fun way to learn about diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes
In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops making insulin. Kids with type 1 get insulin from a pen or a pump, and they check their glucose every day.
Sport and diabetes
Kids with diabetes can play every sport! Moving is great for the body. It also makes glucose go down, so a little planning helps.
